Remembering Scott Weiland

By Steve Craig

It was around 1993 when Scott Weiland came up to the 99X studios, did a quick interview and then headed out to his Live-X acoustic session… He stopped to do a few “I Am 99X” recordings down the hall, thinking it would be cool to use the little bullhorn from the beginning of “Dead and Bloated”.  He was shy & very sweet, but his rock star confidence still shone through.  We really had no idea what was really going on in that troubled soul of his.  For the next several years, we all heard of the heroin addiction, close calls, rehab ins & outs…  The Velvet Revolver and Magnificant Bastards projects were an amazing extension of his talent, but again… the addictions closed in.  I had the good fortune of seeing him a couple times after ’93… and each time he seemed strong, positive and very optimistic.  When Stone Temple Pilots reformed in 2011, my station in NYC, 101.9 RXP hosted the first show on the tour.  His close friend Matt Pinfield of MTV fame was there with me and was just glowing… Scott was cut, sounded incredible and it looked like he was back… Sadly, that didn’t last long.

Some demons never go away… and often can’t even be chased off.   Rest easy, Scott.

During that Live-X session here in Atlanta (where he wrote Interstate Love Song while stuck in traffic on 85!) he recorded this Christmas Classic…

Sounding his most sweetest.
