On This Day in 1970… The dreaded “27 Club” gained another member…

Less than a month after the death of Jimi Hendrix… 27 year old Janis Joplin was found dead of a heroin overdose at the landmark Hotel in Hollywood.


In her native Texas, she was taunted by her classmates in both high school and college, for being overweight, awkward and suffering from severe acne.  She was even voted her college’s “Ugliest Man In Class”.  She found escape with her music (and her portable autoharp!) eventually coming to San Francisco forming “Big Brother & The Holding Company”…  Even after her death, she remains one of the most influential and best-selling artists of all time, with over 15 million albums sold.

Behind the unbridled talent was a destructive wild streak… she accidentally overdosed on some stronger-than-usual heroin while on tour in California.
